Legal Director, Commercial

Summary

Join Shippo's Legal Team as a strategic business partner and commercial, marketing & product attorney. You will help close partnership and commercial deals, counsel the business on risk management, and develop compliance strategies. This role offers the opportunity to build the legal function as it grows and scales, working closely with leadership and the broader organization. The ideal candidate has experience negotiating business-critical agreements, providing business-focused advice, and managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Requirements

• Proven expertise in leading complex commercial negotiations
• Demonstrated ability to deliver value-driven, business-oriented legal counsel to product and technology teams
• Working knowledge in at least two of the following legal areas: marketing, intellectual property, or privacy law
• Experience providing timely, pragmatic legal advice to executive leadership
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Strong ability to quickly learn and navigate new legal domains
• Comfort with ambiguity and a proactive approach to seeking clarity through inquiry
• Entrepreneurial mindset with a high degree of ownership and a solution-oriented approach
• Excellent judgment in prioritizing tasks, managing risk, and determining when to escalate decisions

Responsibilities

• Support business objectives by strategizing, drafting, redlining, and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams - including product, marketing, finance, and security - to identify and assess legal risks while enabling practical, business-driven solutions
• Develop and refine legal and regulatory strategies to address emerging challenges
• Provide sound legal counsel that balances legal exposure with business priorities and risk tolerance
• Contribute to the development and optimization of legal processes and operational workflows to enhance efficiency and scalability
• Uphold the highest standards of integrity, foster a culture of inclusion, and promote a welcoming and respectful work environment
• Engage in continuous learning and knowledge sharing within the legal team to support collective growth and development
