Summary

Join the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies (CGRS) as a Legal Program Associate and contribute to their mission of defending the human rights of asylum seekers. You will support various CGRS programs, including policy & advocacy, training & technical assistance, and the Lived Experience Leadership Project. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience; advanced studies in international human rights law or a related field are preferred but not required
  • Ability to write in a clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive manner
  • Strong proofing skills
  • Enthusiasm to learn and grow in a collaborative staff environment
  • Solid organizational and time-management skills
  • Proficiency with relevant software programs, e.g., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Experience conducting research on a wide range of topics and synthesizing findings
  • Openness to learning how to support CGRS’s website and online databases

  • Travel to San Francisco for annual staff retreat, and willingness to travel for project specific tasks, as needed

Responsibilities

  • In coordination with CGRS Leadership and other staff, lead implementation of the Lived Experience Leadership Project, including planning, recruitment, development of project materials, and oversight of fellows
  • Assist the Policy & Advocacy Program in all aspects of their work, including organizing and participating in meetings with key stakeholders, providing research support, producing materials and memos, proofreading, and formatting reports or other written materials
  • Research, identify, draft, and submit inputs for regional and international human rights bodies and courts, in coordination with the Policy & Advocacy team
  • Support the creation of content for the CGRS website and other external communications and materials, in coordination with the Policy & Advocacy team
  • Support the development of Technical Assistance & Training materials, including drafting country conditions toolkits and resource lists, and assisting with the supervision of country conditions volunteers, in coordination with the Country Conditions Program Coordinator
  • Provide support for webinars, trainings, and presentations, both in person and virtual, for the Training & Technical Assistance and Policy & Advocacy programs. Responsibilities include managing logistics, promoting events, and assisting or presenting as needed
  • Provide support to the Technical Assistance Program, including tasks such as frontline and outcomes outreach, data analysis, and database maintenance, as needed
  • Liaise between legal program staff and development staff, including providing information to comply with grant reporting
  • Provide other general program support on an as-needed basis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in a second language preferred (fluency a plus), particularly in a language spoken by displaced communities, such as Arabic, Dari, Haitian Creole, Mam, Spanish or Ukrainian
  • Lived experience of forced displacement preferred
