Summary

Join our team as an Online Teaching Assistant (TA) and contribute to the successful delivery of asynchronous online courses. Working under the supervision of the instructor of record, you will provide instructional and technological support to online students. Responsibilities include communicating with the instructor, responding to student inquiries, and troubleshooting technical issues. This position is remote within the US and does not involve grading. Familiarity with accounting/finance and energy concepts is required, along with attention to detail and the ability to work independently. Prior teaching experience is preferred.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with accounting/finance concepts – financial statements, time value of money, investment decisions metrics (net present value, internal rate of return, payback)
  • Some exposure to energy-related concepts – e.g., electricity generation, solar PV, electric cars, etc
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently
  • Familiarity with academic technology and willingness to learn new systems and platforms
  • Must be in good academic standing and maintain satisfactory academic progress toward degree completion throughout the teaching assistantship
  • Must not be a registered student in the course for which the teaching assistant is providing support
  • Must be eligible for student employment (restrictions may apply based on visa status, leave status, financial aid, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with the instructor to set expectations for the tasks to be performed before the course begins
  • Familiarize oneself with the course syllabus and academic technology that supports the course, especially the Canvas learning management system
  • Respond to student questions and requests promptly, typically within 24 hours
  • Be available for office hours by appointment to accommodate students located across time zones, if requested by the instructor
  • Report any trends or concerns that might arise to the instructor, while honoring student confidentiality and FERPA regulations
  • Troubleshoot technical issues when they occur and contact the Office of Digital Learning and Inquiry (DLINQ) or Information Technology Services (ITS) as needed
  • Respond to student discussion posts
  • Provide clarity on assignment guidelines
  • Give feedback on draft assignments
  • Hold office hours

Preferred Qualifications

Prior teaching experience or experience facilitating online learning events, such as meetings or professional development
