Product Counsel

Summary

Join Stripe's Product Legal team as a Product Lawyer and become a key advisor to product, engineering, and partnerships teams. You will counsel teams on various legal and regulatory issues related to product development, compliance, and commercialization in the financial services industry. Collaborate with diverse teams across Stripe, build scalable legal processes, and draft foundational documents. Stay updated on international laws and regulations, and act as a proactive business partner to senior managers. This role requires a strong legal background, experience in fintech or payments, and excellent communication and project management skills.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience as a qualified lawyer in a top law firm, in-house legal team and/or government agency, preferably working on commercial and product legal matters
• 2+ years of experience in fintech, financial products, or payments regulatory matters
• A JD degree (or local equivalent) and membership in at least one U.S. state bar
• A passion for technology and ability to understand complex business models and product use cases quickly
• An entrepreneurial spirit – a self-starter and self-learner who thrives in a fast paced environment, deals well with ambiguity and focuses on driving impact
• Excellent judgment and capable of making smart decisions with imperfect information
• Strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
• Excellent project management skills and ability to work under tight deadlines

Responsibilities

• Counsel Stripe product teams operating at the cutting edge intersection of technological innovation, e-commerce user experiences, and financial services compliance on a range of issues including money movement, cross-border, foreign exchange, financial partnerships, payments schemes, GTM, and monetization
• Actively collaborate with a wide variety of Stripe teams, including product, engineering, go-to-market, compliance, risk and marketing, on a range of issues related to product development, product compliance and commercialization
• Work closely with colleagues across Stripe’s global legal team to support Stripe’s regulatory structure, scheme rule compliance, customer agreements, and strategic financial partnerships
• Help build scalable and effective processes for legal review and launch of new products
• Draft, review, and update foundational documents for product and service offerings
• Stay up-to-date, with the support of Stripe’s legal subject matter experts, on international laws and regulations dealing with money movement, payments, financial services, privacy, data security, consumer protection, monetization, and marketing
• Participate as a proactive business partner to senior managers and build a trusted advisor relationship

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with commercial contracting and product counseling
• Experience in payments, financial services, and financial regulations
