Summary

Join our team as a Coordinator of State Relations & Policy and support the Director of State Relations & Policy in implementing the Foundation’s state-level policy agenda. This position requires knowledge of state-level legislative and regulatory processes, assists with state policy tracking and analysis, and helps provide state-level resources to the Foundation’s chapter and affiliate network.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required (or equivalent relevant work experience; for example, each year of work experience may be substituted for each year of education required)
  • A concentration in public policy, health policy, government, or political science is preferred
  • Additional relevant training, education, and/or professional experience (e.g., internships at disability or health organizations, legislative office internships or staff positions) is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of federal and state legislative and administrative processes

Responsibilities

  • Track, analyze, and provide summaries of state legislation and regulations related to access to care, education and awareness, disability rights, and research and innovation
  • Monitor and provide summaries of state-level hearings as needed
  • Draft state-level letters, testimony, regulatory comments, legislative updates, action alerts, position statements, and other materials for the Foundation’s chapter and affiliate network
  • Participate in and provide summaries of state-level advocacy coalition meetings as needed
  • Provide support on state-level policy to the Foundation’s chapter and affiliate network
  • Support the Foundation and its chapter and affiliate network in executing state advocacy days and other advocacy events

Job description

SUMMARY

The Coordinator of State Relations & Policy supports the Director of State Relations & Policy and the Senior Manager of Grassroots Engagement & State Policy in implementing the Foundation’s state-level policy agenda, including the Seizure Safe Schools Act, coverage of seizure detection devices, and other issues related to access to care, education and awareness, disability rights, and research and innovation. This position requires knowledge of state-level legislative and regulatory processes, assists with state policy tracking and analysis, and helps provide state-level resources to the Foundation’s chapter and affiliate network. The Coordinator of State Relations & Policy reports to the Director of State Relations & Policy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Track, analyze, and provide summaries of state legislation and regulations related to access to care, education and awareness, disability rights, and research and innovation.
  • Monitor and provide summaries of state-level hearings as needed.
  • Draft state-level letters, testimony, regulatory comments, legislative updates, action alerts, position statements, and other materials for the Foundation’s chapter and affiliate network.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Foundation and its chapter and affiliate network in executing state advocacy days and other advocacy events.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree required (or equivalent relevant work experience; for example, each year of work experience may be substituted for each year of education required). A concentration in public policy, health policy, government, or political science is preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Additional relevant training, education, and/or professional experience (e.g., internships at disability or health organizations, legislative office internships or staff positions) is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of federal and state legislative and administrative processes.

  • Understanding of, or desire to learn about, epilepsy and its impact on individuals and families.
  • Basic understanding of, or desire to learn about, health and disability policy issues.
  • Ability to be a strong team player as well as work on projects independently.
  • Policy tracking and analysis skills.
  • Good written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Flexibility and adaptability to manage an evolving political and policy landscape.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities/direct reports.

TRAVEL, WORK ENVIRONMENT, AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This is a full-time position, working 35 hours per week, generally Monday-Friday, 9 AM-5 PM. The employee is expected to be flexible, as needed.
  • This position is eligible for telework from an approved alternative worksite.
  • If the selected candidate resides in the Washington, D.C. area, the Foundation has some office space in Washington, D.C., where this position can occasionally work.
  • This position is required to participate in all team and staff meetings.
  • Travel will be minimal.
