Summary

Join TerrAscend, a leading North American cannabis operator, as their Senior Director of Tax! Reporting to the SVP of Finance, you will build and lead the in-house tax function, overseeing all aspects of tax provision, compliance, planning, and strategy across U.S. and Canadian subsidiaries. Partner with senior leadership to ensure regulatory compliance and deliver increased organizational value through efficient tax management and innovative strategies. This key role requires strong corporate tax experience from public accounting, coupled with diverse experience in compliance, provision, and tax planning. You will manage a team, handle tax audits, and advise on M&A tax implications. TerrAscend offers a competitive salary and benefits package.

Requirements

  • This role requires at least 8 years of progressive responsibility in Tax, with a mix of private and public experience at the Manager or more senior level
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Tax
  • In-depth technical knowledge of tax laws and regulations
  • Excellent business acumen with a sound understanding of the tax implications of a multinational manufacturing and distribution company
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative and creative solutions to complex issues

Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of direct and indirect tax for the enterprise, including tax reporting, cash tax forecasting, management of the tax team and costs, strategic solutioning, and ensuring tax compliance for the company
  • Act as the primary tax advisor to the executive leadership team, offering insights on tax implications for critical business decisions
  • Manage the Tax team, including both in-house staff and third-party tax firms
  • Oversee the timely and accurate filings of indirect tax returns performed on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis
  • Manage tax provision calculations in accordance with ASC 740 and collaborate with finance teams for accurate financial reporting
  • Lead the tax accounting provision process and reporting for the company’s operations, including the reporting of uncertain tax positions, calculation of effective tax rates, deferred tax items, related journal entries, and review of tax account reconciliations
  • Manage the tax calendar and ensure the timely filing of all tax-related returns
  • Responsible for the U.S. GAAP consolidated income tax provision for TerrAscend and its subsidiaries, ensuring that tax provisions and balance sheet tax accounts are properly stated
  • Oversee and approve the preparation of federal and multi-state income tax returns
  • Approve estimated federal and state tax payment calculations and the related submissions of payments
  • Oversee compliance with international tax regulations, including transfer pricing, cross-border transactions, and foreign tax credit utilization
  • Handle tax audits, including those involving international components, and liaise with tax authorities to resolve issues efficiently
  • Oversee all federal and state tax audits and notices
  • Provide tax due diligence and structuring advice for M&A as needed
  • Manage relationships with external auditors and tax authorities, including handling audits and inquiries
  • Ensure compliance with all tax-related internal controls
  • Provide ad hoc monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting, as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or JD in Tax
  • CPA
  • Big Four tax/accounting or large corporate experience
  • Experience in the cannabis industry
