Summary
Join the ACLU of Northern California as a Staff Attorney to help build and expand the cutting-edge legal and policy work of the Technology and Civil Liberties Program. The Staff Attorney will provide vision and support to a program nationally recognized for its leadership in defending civil liberties and civil rights and promoting social justice in the digital age.
Requirements
- D. from an ABA-accredited law school
- Membership in the California State Bar
- 2 or more years of litigation and/or policy experience, preferably related to the technology and civil liberties field
- Interest and understanding of technology and civil liberties work
- Experience engaging in the investigation, development, initiation and litigation of high-impact cases and/or experience with the development and implementation of policy advocacy on the local, state or national level
- Strong legal research, analysis, and writing abilities, and ability to craft novel and successful legal and policy strategies in response to inequitable systems
- Ability to effectively communicate, through both writing and public speaking, to various audiences about complex legal and technical issues
- Demonstrated initiative and creative problem-solving
- Strong project and time management skills, including a high level of organization, attention to detail, and follow-through, while balancing and prioritizing multiple activities and responsibilities
- Relationship-building skills and willingness to work as part of a team, and to be an engaged, proactive member of internal cohorts, as well as outside coalitions on which you work and interact
- Commitment to diversity and demonstrated ability to hold and foster difficult and necessary conversations about race, class, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, ability, and other identity-based issues
- Commitment to incorporating racial equity principles into all aspects of work
Responsibilities
- Engage in the investigation, development, initiation, and litigation of high-impact cases
- Engage in legal-policy advocacy at the local, state, and national level
- Forge and maintain relationships with community members, coalition groups, experts, government officials, and academics to engage them in our work and implement collaborative projects
- Participate in team, department, and other meetings; help to set a collaborative, inclusive culture for the Technology and Civil Liberties team; engage with colleagues at other ACLU affiliates and National ACLU as well as with external partners
Preferred Qualifications
- Intersectional analysis and the ability to contextualize technology and civil liberties issues within other social justice movements
- Direct personal or professional experience with impacted communities and/or with grassroots and community-based organizations
