Assistant Photo Editor

Summary

Join Afar's fully-remote art department as a highly organized and enthusiastic photo editor. This full-time role involves close collaboration with the photo director on photo research for digital and print platforms. Responsibilities include researching and sourcing photography, optimizing photos for web, overseeing digital image management, maintaining the image archive, negotiating photo rights, assisting with budget management, and ensuring efficient workflow across multiple departments. The ideal candidate possesses 1-2 years of relevant experience, strong organizational and communication skills, and proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Google Workspace. A passion for travel and a collaborative spirit are essential. The salary range is $55,000 - $60,000 annually.

Requirements

• 1-2 years photography and/or editorial experience
• Ability to work under tight deadlines and limited budgets, and manage multiple projects at once
• Experience with photo researching, sourcing imagery from agencies as well as photographers
• Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills
• Must be a proactive self-starter with a collaborative spirit, and be excited about working across multiple departments
• Have a strong visual understanding about what makes a good photograph
• Passionate about travel, and an interest in conceptualizing new and interesting ways to look at travel
• Experience with Adobe Photoshop
• Experience with Google Workspace

Responsibilities

• Research and source stock and press photography for digital stories as well as packages in our quarterly print magazine
• Optimize photos for web and upload into Afar’s CMS
• Oversee digital image management between art, edit, and social teams
• Keep image archive organized and up-to-date
• Negotiate photo rights and usage with agencies and photographers
• Assist in managing art department budget across digital and print platforms
