Summary

Join WorkMoney, Inc. as their new Controller and lead their accounting operations, ensuring financial accuracy and compliance. Reporting to the CFO, you will oversee a team, manage all accounting functions, and build scalable systems. This role requires a mission-driven financial leader with at least 8 years of progressive accounting experience, including 4+ years in a leadership role. You will translate financial complexity into clarity for cross-functional teams and improve accounting systems. The ideal candidate is a systems thinker, collaborator, and people-centered leader. Requirements

  • Mission & Values Alignment: Be inspired by the WorkMoney mission and passionate about advancing economic fairness and opportunity
  • Financial Leadership & Integrity: Have at least 8 years of progressive accounting experience, including 4 or more years in a leadership role
  • GAAP Mastery & Technical Excellence: Be fluent in GAAP and technical accounting standards and have successfully managed financial operations for organizations with $40M+ across multiple entities, including 501(c)4 and 501(c)(3)
  • Systems Thinker & Operational Builder: Be a systems thinker who understands how financial infrastructure supports long-term strategy
  • Cross-Functional Collaborator: Excel at building relationships across teams and communicating financial concepts accessibly
  • Nonprofit or Mission-Driven Experience: Understand the unique requirements of nonprofit accounting
  • Change Leader & Scaler: Have helped organizations evolve by scaling teams, improving systems, or building new processes

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, and monthly close
  • Review the monthly close process and prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements
  • Collaborate with colleagues across teams/departments, making funder requirements less intimidating, bringing clarity to budgets
  • Work cross-functionally to scope improvements to accounting systems and tools
  • Coordinate with auditors to ensure a seamless audit process
  • Review and refine financial policies and internal controls
  • Meet with department leads to review forecasts, explain variances, and offer guidance
  • Oversee grant and restricted fund accounting, ensuring compliance and accuracy
  • Identify areas where processes, systems, or structures need to evolve and propose thoughtful, scalable solutions
  • Mentor team members, celebrate wins, and identify new opportunities for growth

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA designation
  • Experience supporting participatory budgeting and/or collaborative financial planning
