Summary
Join Blavity Inc. as a Copy Editor for AFROTECHβ’, ensuring high journalistic standards by reviewing and editing news stories for accuracy, clarity, and engagement. This remote, full-time contractor role requires 2+ years of newsroom experience, strong communication skills, and a passion for tech, business, and innovation news, particularly within the Black community. You will be responsible for maintaining Blavity's editorial style guide, fact-checking content, and collaborating with writers and editors to enhance content quality.
Requirements
- Education : B.A. in Journalism, Communication, or a related field
- Required Experience : 2+ years experience in a newsroom environment
- Fluent in WordPress, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Asana, and/or comparable project management suite
Responsibilities
- Review and copy-edit news articles, reports, and interviews for grammar, style, accuracy, and clarity
- Ensure that content aligns with Blavityβs editorial style guide and standards, including conducting regular quality control checks
- Fact-check and verify the accuracy of news stories' information, sources, and data
- Collaborate with writers and editors to improve the overall quality of content
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in news writing, copy editing, and/or journalism
- High-energy, company-first, positive attitude; must be motivated to work hard in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication and analytical skills; outgoing and sociable; willing to wear multiple hats
- Naturally detail-oriented, with an obsessive need to document and communicate findings
- In-depth knowledge of tech, business, and innovation news, especially related to the Black community
- A healthy appreciation of GIFs and Black culture
