Summary

Join KIPP Public Schools as a Director of Mathematics - High School and partner with regions to implement One KIPP K-12 Math initiatives. You will support the implementation of a comprehensive AP-aligned high school curriculum, manage assessments, and develop instructional coaching tools. Responsibilities include leading professional development sessions, coaching regional academic leaders, and monitoring student achievement data. The ideal candidate possesses strong math instructional and coaching expertise, a proven track record of advancing student outcomes, and experience in instructional leadership. The position can be based in a KIPP Foundation office (NYC or Chicago) or remotely.

Requirements

  • Strong math instructional and coaching expertise including deep secondary math content and pedagogical knowledge, knowledge of culturally relevant teaching practices and familiarity with current research; Demonstrated track record of results in advancing student outcomes. Knowledge of and skilled in effective professional learning and instructional coaching techniques. Understanding of the differences between teaching that is procedural based and focused on telling versus teaching in which the teacher facilitates student learning through rich tasks and understanding
  • Demonstrated record of setting ambitious goals and achieving them with consistency. Invests in developing teammates’ skills and mindsets to address gaps in achieving team growth; determines what quantitative and qualitative data are most relevant to their goals and supports the team in creating and monitoring systems for collecting, reviewing, and acting upon data to drive outcomes; able to monitor progress, communicating status to the right stakeholders and adjusting plans and use of time to ensure systems are yielding desired outcomes
  • Highly skilled and experienced in leading the Internalization and Planning process, conducting Observation/Feedback meetings, providing real-time feedback, leading Weekly Data Meetings, setting academic goals and monitoring progress
  • Efficiently defines the right metrics to evaluate work and ensures critical team actions, decisions, and recommendations are driven by data; effectively works with team to resolve issues around data to ensure sound data-informed decisions. Effectively identifies and addresses root causes to the most important problem
  • Effectively articulates case for change through clear and compelling presentations and translates this into actional plans. Effectively tailors communications and engagement approach for different audiences to deepen investment and drive actions and behavior change that would lead to org-wide goals; acts as a champion for change with cross-team stakeholders
  • Demonstrated track record of student achievement in secondary mathematics, in their own teaching, through their coaching, and across multiple school sites
  • Experience leading and managing major, complex efforts requiring strong process and project management as well as significant stakeholder engagement and management
  • 4+ years of math teaching experience
  • 2+ years of math instructional coaching/curriculum development/program implementation or similar out-of-classroom experience
  • 2+ years of experience math instructional leadership at a district/regional level or similar role supporting across multiple schools
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Responsibilities

  • With the Vice President of STEM, the Director of Mathematics – High School, supports the implementation of our long-term One KIPP K-12 mathematics model to meet annual student outcome goals
  • Maintain and manage the implementation and roll-out of a comprehensive AP-aligned high school curriculum program (Imagine IM/Carnegie) across the KIPP Network
  • Support the effective execution of our One KIPP high school assessment strategy in mathematics, including the administration of curriculum-embedded assessments, universal screeners and diagnostics in applicable grades, and college readiness exams, e.g. AP, ACT, SAT, etc
  • Research and develop instructional coaching tools and resources that support the One KIPP high school curriculum and assessment strategy
  • Participate in and support cross-team advisory, planning, or similar work in support of KIPP Foundation or Network priorities
  • Drive year-over-year improvements in student outcomes on curriculum-embedded assessments, benchmark assessments, and state assessments
  • Support the development of regional and school-based academic leaders across KIPP in acquiring the content knowledge necessary to lead the implementation of high-quality math curricula at the high school level
  • Co-design and co-facilitate monthly professional development sessions for regional and high school academic leaders across the KIPP network. Professional development sessions are rooted in evidence-based practices and include: Curriculum Design, Instructional Coaching, Rubric Norming
  • Assist regional leaders with the strategic planning process that follows professional development
  • Assist regional leaders to develop effective professional learning cycles from planning and execution of professional learning experiences, monitoring of participant learning and reactions, school support and implementation of new learning, to impacts on student outcomes
  • Coach regional academic leaders across KIPP in building the technical and adaptive coaching skills necessary to drive strong curriculum implementation and teacher development over time
  • Partner directly with a 3 to 4 regions to build and/or refine their high school math systems (e.g., talent, curriculum and assessment, coaching) so that they create excellent and equitable experiences for all students. This includes: Set and monitor student achievement goals, Monitor, track and analyze student achievement data to drive content development and support math strategy, Monitor and improve the quality of instructional coaching and teacher development
  • Conduct at least 4 site visits with each partner region to support regional implementation and alignment with the high school math strategy through classroom observations, rubric evaluations, direct-to-source professional development planning and facilitation, and 6–8-week action planning sessions that focus on both teacher input and student outcome measures
  • Lead regular advisory/coaching calls/office hours to support regional partners in developing and executing a program that meets their regional vision and goals in alignment with the KIPP K-12 math model, e.g., a coaching systems and structures, curriculum and assessment implementation supports, approach to teacher and leader development, etc

Experience teaching or supporting Illustrative Mathematics, preferred
