Summary
Join Vercel's team as an Engineering Manager for Turbopack, leading and growing the team responsible for Vercel's next-generation bundler and development engine. You will scale Turbopack across the ecosystem, improve local and cloud performance, and collaborate with other teams. This role involves overseeing critical initiatives, including improved startup time and framework-level integration. You will mentor senior engineers and balance product delivery with long-term platform improvements. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to shape the roadmap and advocate for a great developer experience. The position requires proven experience managing high-performing teams in a systems or developer tooling environment.
Requirements
- Proven experience managing high-performing teams in a systems or developer tooling environment
- Strong technical background in compilers, build systems, JavaScript/TypeScript tooling, or systems-level engineering
- Track record of successfully delivering high-impact products in complex technical domains
- Skilled at fostering a culture of technical rigor, thoughtful abstraction, and fast iteration
- Deep understanding of performance optimization, dev tooling ergonomics, and the demands of frontend frameworks
- Comfortable managing ambiguity, shaping strategy, and influencing cross-functional roadmaps
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially in hybrid or distributed environments
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Turbopack team, fostering an inclusive culture of technical excellence, product ownership, and collaboration
- Drive technical direction and execution for Turbopack’s roadmap—from fast local development to cloud bundling and beyond
- Partner with teams across Vercel to ensure Turbopack is optimized for the entire developer workflow, including integrations with Next.js, the Vercel platform, and internal performance tooling
- Develop strong alignment between product, design, and engineering to ensure we’re solving the most impactful developer problems
- Mentor and grow senior ICs, helping them expand their technical scope and impact
- Balance product delivery with deep investments in long-term platform reliability, performance, and maintainability
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, open-source contributors, and the broader web community to inform roadmap priorities and technical decisions
- Advocate for great developer experience across the entire bundling and dev server stack
Preferred Qualifications
- Have led or contributed to open-source tools in the JS/TS ecosystem (e.g., Webpack, esbuild, Babel, SWC)
- Have worked on large-scale build pipelines, asset compilers, or code transformation systems
- Have experience working with Rust or other systems languages
- Have experience managing platform-level investments alongside product delivery
- Have worked in a hybrid environment and are comfortable managing remote engineers
