Gis Analyst

Summary

Join Ballotpedia's summer 2025 internship program as a GIS Analyst intern and contribute to improving voter access to election information. You will work remotely, researching and formatting shapefiles for political boundaries used in Ballotpedia's sample ballot lookup app. The internship involves tasks such as researching legal voting requirements, sourcing maps, testing and formatting files, and working with Ballotpedia's database. You'll receive weekly one-on-one meetings with a team member for task coordination and attend topical meetings or webinars. The internship is part-time (10-20 hours/week) and offers compensation of $16.00/hour (or your area's minimum wage if higher). Ballotpedia can facilitate credit for your internship experience.

Requirements

• Have a well-functioning computer with internet access
• Submit a resume and cover letter in PDF format
• Include a statement of what you hope to learn from this internship in your cover letter
• Ensure your resume or cover letter includes your current address

Responsibilities

• Research and format shapefiles for political boundaries
• Research to understand the legal requirements for who can vote in which types of elections
• Source maps through online research, outreach to government offices, or georeferencing to create new shapefiles
• Test and format the files to conform to Ballotpedia's database requirements
• Work with the Ballotpedia database to add the boundaries and perform tests
• Perform other GIS or database-oriented activities as assigned based on skill, interest, and need

Preferred Qualifications

• Have GIS experience (working with shapefiles, formatting, georeferencing) using tools such as ArcGIS or QGIS
• Have research/data entry experience
• Have some coding knowledge (Python, SQL)
• Have some familiarity with Google Applications (Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive, etc.)
