International Refugee Assistance Project
Summary
Join IRAP Europe, a leading international legal aid organization, as a legal intern supporting the direct legal services team. You will work on client representation in family reunification legal proceedings and other pathways to France. Responsibilities include drafting legal submissions, conducting legal research, drafting practitioner guides, assisting with client interviews, and other duties as assigned. The ideal candidate is a current law student with strong research, writing, and analytical skills, excellent English and French communication skills, and a strong interest in refugee and migration law. The internship is full-time, 8-10 weeks between June and August 2025, and can be in-person in Berlin or remote. Compensation is the hourly minimum wage in the country of work.
Requirements
- Current law student (currently in Master 1 or 2 in Law)
- Strong interest in refugee and migration law
- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Sensitivity to client empowerment and to working with clients of all backgrounds, including LGBTI clients, survivors of trauma, and other vulnerable populations
- Initiative to see projects through and ability to multitask
- Proficiency in Google Workspace
- Excellent English and French communication skills required
- Must have work authorization in the country of work
- This is a full-time internship that requires an 8- to 10-week commitment between June and August 2025
Responsibilities
- Support the direct representation of clients in family reunification and humanitarian visa procedures to France by drafting legal submissions or administrative appeals for clients and preparing case files and supporting documents for submissions or appeals
- Conduct legal research on immigration and asylum legislation and case law related to family reunification and humanitarian visa cases in France, analyzing and summarizing legal texts and court decisions
- Draft and update legal practitioner guides, analyzing changes in law and newly released government documents, and creating other materials to assist IRAP staff and legal aid practitioners
- Assist in conducting client interviews and gathering relevant information from clients, and drafting witness statements and supporting letters
- Other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to speak Arabic, Tigrinya, Dari, Somali, or Pashto is a plus

The internship will be compensated at the hourly minimum wage applicable in the country of work (Germany, if in-office, and in the country of residence, if remote)
