Managing Editor

Summary

Join Works in Progress as a full-time managing editor to manage our pipeline, edit drafts, and commission new articles.

Requirements

• Has experience in full-time editing for a publication with multiple contributors (a magazine, a newsletter, or similar), or some other demonstrable track record as an editor of articles or books similar to Works in Progress
• Has managed a large and complex pipeline of long-form articles, books or similar over a number of years, from different contributors
• Is familiar with Works in Progress’s existing work and some of its subject areas

Responsibilities

• Managing our pipeline: Tracking forthcoming pieces, managing our communication with authors, and helping the team plan its editing and output
• Managing WIP’s Twitter account
• Managing WIP’s Substack; and
• Managing print production and distribution in North America (with support)
• Helping writers to craft and develop their ideas, providing feedback throughout the writing and editing process
• Editing articles to make sure everything we publish meets our standards and style – being extremely clear, logically consistent, interesting, and thought-provoking; and
• Working with other editors (internal and external) on our articles, overseeing their work

Preferred Qualifications

• Is a very good editor of long-form non-fiction writing
• Can find and suggest new authors across a wide range of subjects and judge whether article topics are interesting to people who already know about a field
• Is organised and reliable
• Writes clearly and simply
• Is very good at expressing complex ideas clearly and simply
