Product Counsel, Payments

Summary

Join Stripe's Product Legal team as a product lawyer advising product, engineering, and partnerships teams. You will manage legal and regulatory elements of product design, build, and execution, working on complex technical, commercial, and regulatory issues. Counsel teams on payments regulations, financial partnerships, data privacy, and marketing. Collaborate with various teams on product development and commercialization, supporting deal negotiation with financial partners. Help build scalable legal review processes and draft foundational documents for Stripe's payments products. Stay updated on relevant US and international laws and regulations. This role requires 5+ years of experience as a qualified lawyer working with financial institutions or fintech companies.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience as a qualified lawyer in a top law firm, in-house legal team and/or government agency working with financial institutions or financial technology companies on product legal matters and financial partner negotiations
• A juris doctorate degree
• Experience counseling product teams, technical teams, and other non-lawyers on product development and deal structure
• A passion for technology and ability to understand complex business models and product use cases quickly
• An entrepreneurial spirit – a self-starter and self-learner who thrives in a fast paced environment, deals well with ambiguity and focuses on driving impact
• Excellent judgement and capable of making smart decisions with imperfect information
• Strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
• Excellent project management skills and ability to work under tight deadlines

Responsibilities

• Counsel Stripe product and partnerships teams on a range of issues including payments regulations (including for money transmission or e-money), financial partnerships, payment schemes rules, data privacy, marketing, and monetization
• Collaborate with Stripe teams, including product, partnerships, engineering, compliance, marketing, and risk on product development and commercialization
• Support the drafting and negotiation of key deals with Stripe’s financial partners
• Work closely with colleagues across Stripe’s legal team to support Stripe’s regulatory structure, scheme rule compliance, customer agreements, and financial partnerships
• Help build scalable and effective processes for legal review and launch of new products
• Draft, review, and update foundational documents for Stripe’s payments products
• Stay up-to-date, with the support of Stripe’s legal team, on US and international laws and regulations dealing with payments, financial services, data privacy, and marketing
• Participate as a proactive business partner to senior leaders and build relationships as a trusted advisor
