Senior QA Engineer - Role Overview

If we were to be seeking an experienced Senior QA Engineer to join our engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both manual and automation testing, with the ability to set up automation testing environments from the ground up. While the role will primarily focus on manual testing in the short term, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in laying the foundation for future test automation initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute comprehensive manual test plans, test cases, and test scripts
  • Perform thorough functional, regression, and user acceptance testing
  • Identify, document, and track bugs and issues using bug tracking tools
  • Collaborate with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and ensure quality throughout the development lifecycle
  • Set up and maintain test environments for various projects
  • Design and implement test automation frameworks and scripts for future use
  • Analyze test results to ensure existing functionality and recommend corrective action

Required Skills and Experience

  • 5-7+ years of experience in software quality assurance, with a strong focus on manual testing
  • Proven experience in setting up automation testing environments from scratch
  • Strong understanding of software QA methodologies, tools, and processes
  • Experience with test case design, execution, and defect tracking
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong team player who contributes positively to company culture
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Self-starter mentality with a proactive approach to learning and problem-solving

Detailed Skillset

Manual Testing

  • Expert-level proficiency in creating and executing manual test cases
  • Experience with exploratory testing techniques
  • Strong understanding of various testing types (e.g., functional, regression, integration, system)
  • Familiarity with usability and user acceptance testing

Test Automation

  • Experience setting up automation testing environments from the ground up
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language commonly used for test automation (e.g., Python, Java, JavaScript)
  • Familiarity with test automation frameworks (e.g., Selenium, Cypress, TestNG)
  • Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and their integration with automated tests

Tools & Technologies

  • Proficiency in using test management tools (e.g., TestRail, Zephyr)
  • Experience with bug tracking systems (e.g., JIRA, Bugzilla)
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git)
  • Knowledge of API testing tools (e.g., Postman, SoapUI)

Database & SQL

  • Basic understanding of database concepts and SQL queries for test data management

Performance & Security Testing

  • Familiarity with performance testing concepts and tools (e.g., JMeter, Gatling)
  • Basic understanding of security testing principles

Additional Skills

  • Understanding of web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Familiarity with mobile testing (iOS and Android)
  • Knowledge of accessibility testing principles

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • ISTQB certification or equivalent
  • Experience with cloud testing environments (e.g., AWS, Azure)
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker)
