Senior Director, Managing Counsel

Summary

Join Twilio as our next Senior Director and Managing Counsel, Privacy, reporting to the Chief Privacy Officer. This remote role requires 15+ years of legal experience, predominantly in tech-focused privacy, with significant experience in private practice and in-house roles. You will advise on global privacy laws, counsel product and legal teams, and support privacy by design. Experience in M&A due diligence, data breach response, and team management is crucial. Preferred qualifications include experience with communications privacy laws and AI/ML products. Requirements

• Be licensed to practice law in the US and in good standing with your local bar
• Have 15+ years of legal experience predominantly in a tech focused product and non-product privacy field, with at least four years experience,  in private practice, 5 in house and 3+ years at a director level with significant privacy focus during this time
• Have excellent organizational and project management skills, strong communication skills, quick learner, and a strong sense of initiative

Responsibilities

• Advise on privacy laws in EMEA, APJ, LATAM and North America, especially CCPA, US State privacy laws and GDPR, and influence law and policy in partnership with a policy team
• Counsel both product and legal teams regarding global privacy law and obligations, and support privacy by design within product lifecycle development
• Advise on employment privacy both in and outside the US
• Negotiate data protection terms with customers and vendors
• Advise sales, marketing and related data analytics teams
• Serve as the privacy subject matter expert during M&A due diligence, contract negotiation and integration
• Conduct or support privacy impact assessments and provide audit support
• Support data breach situations and notifications
• Support a Chief Privacy Officer or other executive responsible for Privacy in areas such as risk management and governance, reporting and escalations
• Manage and develop other attorneys and lead a team, with the ability to act as a “Player / Coach,” being both able to provide practical privacy legal counsel and manage/mentor a team of mid-senior level attorneys
• Develop highly effective and collaborative partnerships with privacy governance specialists and other internal stakeholders, influence and drive outcomes
• Triage and prioritize a heavy workflow in alignment with enterprise and privacy team priorities and OKRs, setting appropriate expectations with internal clients and delivering results efficiently

Preferred Qualifications

• Have experience counseling organizations in relation to communications privacy laws, such as ePrivacy, ECPA, CIPA, and global anti-spam laws, as well as sector specific laws, such as HIPAA
• Have experience counseling teams developing AI/ML products and services
• Have experience in supporting the implementation and governance of Binding Corporate Rules
• Have at least one CIPP certification
