Summary

Join SMX as a highly motivated System Administrator Journeyman to maintain various systems in a Software Development program. You will provide mid-level technical support and maintenance for Windows-based server and desktop environments in a fully remote role, ensuring system reliability, data integrity, and compliance with DoD and defense-contracting standards. Responsibilities include process documentation, SOP development, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. This role requires a Secret clearance and 3-10 years of progressive experience in systems administration. You will remotely manage systems, monitor services, execute data migrations, respond to support requests, and maintain documentation. The position demands exceptional troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills.

Requirements

  • Clearance Required: Secret
  • 3 to10 years of progressive experience in systems administration or a related discipline
  • Operating System certificate (i.e. Windows or Linux) and COMPTIA Security + or other DOD INST 8570 compliant qualification
  • Exceptional troubleshooting, analytical, and critical-thinking abilities in a remote setting
  • Self-directed, highly organized, and capable of managing competing priorities with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, adept at clear documentation and virtual collaboration
  • Proactive mindset focused on process improvements, automation, and enhanced security controls
  • Proven ability to build rapport and maintain service levels within a geographically dispersed team

Responsibilities

  • Remotely access and manage systems via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and virtual desktops across multiple security domains
  • Monitor, configure, and restart Windows services to maintain optimal performance and availability
  • Execute data migrations and server-to-server transfers, ensuring data integrity and secure handling of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)
  • Respond to internal support requests through a ticketing system (e.g., ServiceNow), leveraging templates and automation for efficiency
  • Produce and maintain SOPs and technical documentation for recurring tasks and system configurations
  • Operate within DoD and defense-contractor networks in accordance with DoD 8570/8140, NIST SP 800-53, CMMC, and STIG requirements
  • Participate in virtual team meetings, after-action reviews, and status reporting while collaborating across time zones

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience configuring and managing Internet Information Services (IIS) in multi-tier .NET environments, including web.config/app.config management
  • Proficiency with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and support of on-premises and AWS GovCloud (RDS, Aurora) databasesโ€”covering monitoring, backups, restores, and security patching
  • Working knowledge of Active Directory (including AD FS), DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and scripting with PowerShell or Bash for automation and compliance auditing
  • Familiarity with remote access solutions (Citrix, Azure Virtual Desktop) and secure VPN technologies
  • Experience operating under FedRAMP Moderate/High or DoD Impact Level (IL2โ€“6) cloud environments
