Summary

Join Kaeppel Consulting as a Web Developer to design, develop, and implement a comprehensive digital library system for a Texas city library. This temporary/freelance (or full-time) remote position requires experience with bibliographic systems (Koha, Greenstone, or Biblio), metadata management, and UI/UX best practices. You will develop a web-based bibliographic system, integrate a searchable database, implement MARC record integration, and ensure ADA & WCAG compliance. The ideal candidate possesses strong front-end and back-end development skills, database management expertise, and experience with digital asset management systems. Salary is negotiable.

Requirements

  • Front-End Development: HTML, CSS, JavaScript (React, Vue, or Angular)
  • Back-End Development: Python (Django/Flask), PHP (Laravel), or Node.js
  • Database Management: MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB
  • Bibliographic System Experience: Koha, Greenstone, Biblio, or custom-built solutions
  • Content Management Systems (CMS): Omeka, WordPress (preferred but not required)
  • Metadata Standards Knowledge: MARC, Dublin Core, MODS
  • API Integration: MARC records, DOI systems, or Open Library APIs
  • Understanding of SEO & accessibility standards
  • Experience with digital asset management systems (DAMS)

Responsibilities

  • Develop and design a web-based bibliographic system for cataloging library and archival materials
  • Integrate a searchable database for books, documents, and digital collections
  • Implement MARC record integration for bibliographic data management
  • Develop user authentication systems with different access levels (public, researchers, admins)
  • Ensure ADA & WCAG compliance for an inclusive digital experience
  • Optimize the website for speed, security, and mobile responsiveness
  • Set up cloud hosting or on-premise server solutions as required
  • Provide ongoing maintenance and technical support post-launch

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with libraries, museums, or archival institutions
  • Familiarity with library automation software
  • Knowledge of cloud hosting platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, or DigitalOcean)
  • Experience in OCR (Optical Character Recognition) implementation for digitized documents
