Summary
Join UpTogether, a systems change organization dedicated to ending poverty, as a part-time, remote Compliance Specialist. Working under the Compliance Manager, you will ensure the organization's adherence to legal obligations and internal guidelines. Key responsibilities include managing subcontractor agreements, tracking expenses, facilitating escheatment, and assisting with audits. The ideal candidate possesses strong knowledge of legal compliance, nonprofit audit requirements, and advanced spreadsheet skills. Requirements
- Demonstrated knowledge of legal compliance regarding IRS rules, contract management and performance, lobbying, and unclaimed property from the perspective of a 501(c)3 organization
- Ability to identify and understand the requirements of government contract and philanthropic funder agreements
- Demonstrated knowledge of nonprofit and government audit requirements
- Experience in advanced spreadsheet use and visual presentation of financial data and information
- Familiarity with federal reporting, and federal regulations including experience with OMB uniform guidance and single audits
- Basic understanding of organizational and project budgets and how they inform funder agreements
- BA/BS in Business Administration/Nonprofit management/Legal studies or equivalent work experience
- Prior experience working in contract compliance, financial controls, legal compliance, or related administrative field within the nonprofit sector
- Experience and familiarity in understanding legal contracts, agreements, rules and related documents
- Have excellent verbal and written communication skills, responding to internal and external needs in a timely manner and listening, being thoughtful in your response, and setting clear expectations
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member across disciplines with team members in finance, partnerships & revenue, technology and operations
- Self-starter with excellent analytical skills, a detail-oriented mindset, the ability to prioritize effectively, meet deadlines, follow through to execute all tasks and demonstrate a high degree of accuracy
- Interest in working in an organization that continuously evolves,requiring flexibility and excitement for iteration
- Be keenly interested in learning from others
- Ability to travel, as needed, for in-person and occasional team meetings
- Ability to thrive in a remote work environment, self-directed, proactively reaches out, responsive, and comfortable in a virtual setting
- Demonstrated commitment to, or passion for, our mission; deep belief and trust in the innate capabilities of families with limited incomes and their communities; willingness to engage in conversations aimed at addressing erroneous stereotypes about people with limited incomes and people of color
- Strong command of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google applications required
Responsibilities
- Assure compliance with internal financial and audit controls, policies, guidelines and practices and help identify areas for process improvement and assist with implementation of new processes
- Support in executing and tracking subcontractor agreements by team and towards the annual budget
- Tracking staff time, expenses and states in which lobbying is performed
- Routine checks to ensure our internal revenue systems reflect contractual agreements
- Facilitating escheatment of unclaimed property and reporting to state departments with external consultants
- Assist in document collection for government contract and annual organizational audits
- Coordinate state foreign entity and charitable registration state filings with external consultants and/or file on behalf of the organization
- Secure proof of organizational insurance coverage (certificates of insurance) as needed
- Undertake additional responsibilities as needed in support of the Compliance & Finance teams and organizational cross-collaboration
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in Salesforce, Asana preferred
