Engineering Manager

Summary

Join SwingDev, the Polish branch of Hippo Insurance, a fast-growing InsurTech company, and lead a brand-new engineering team focused on Spinnaker, Hippo’s fronting insurance company. As the Spinnaker charter Engineering Manager, you will hire and lead a team of software and data engineers, crafting and developing a strong vision for internal software and data products. You will collaborate with various stakeholders, drive architectural decisions, and establish best practices. This role involves building core internal tools and platforms, fostering a culture of innovation, and mentoring a growing team. You will also represent the engineering voice in strategic discussions and work with global teams across the US and Poland. The position requires hands-on software development experience, people management skills, and strong technical proficiency in areas such as JavaScript/Node.js, React, or Python.

Requirements

• Have relevant hands-on experience in software development
• Bring a track record of people management and team leadership
• Communicate clearly, handle escalations with confidence, and keep projects moving forward
• Are relentlessly focused on the end-user and passionate about building customer-centric solutions
• Know how to build strong teams, grow individuals, and influence cross-functional partners and senior leadership
• Thrive in fast-paced environments and are adaptable to shifting priorities or expanding scopes
• Have strong technical proficiency in parts of our stack, such as JavaScript/Node.js, React, or Python
• Bring deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, and systems design
• Have experience working with databases, particularly PostgreSQL and BigQuery

Responsibilities

• Lead the formation of a brand-new engineering team
• Design, build, and evolve core internal tools and platforms
• Collaborate closely with product, finance, legal, and data stakeholders
• Drive architectural decisions and establish best practices from the ground up
• Foster a culture of experimentation, innovation, and technical ownership
• Coach and mentor a small but growing team of engineers
• Define team goals and outcomes through clear, measurable OKRs
• Navigate ambiguity and drive execution in a zero-to-one setting
• Represent the engineering voice in high-level strategic discussions
• Drive technical review of design documents, code review, prioritization of development roadmap, and fixes
• Work with, and influence, cross-functional stakeholders within Hippo, e.g. Product, Design, QA, and Finance
• Mentor and lead other engineers, develop them for higher impact and teamwork
• With a data-driven approach, show technical leadership, focusing on excellent execution and high-quality software delivery
• Work with teams in our global locations across the US and Poland
