Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field of study
  • 5+ years professional experience as a Biologist, Environmental Monitor, Environmental Inspector, Environmental Planner, or related role
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills โ€“ data collection and interpretation, technical report writing, regulatory permit applications, client communications, etc
  • Strong working knowledge of environmental regulations and best management practices
  • Experience developing summary reports related to construction activities and/or compliance status
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously with minimal supervision
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated and highly organized with strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to build strong, lasting relationships with key stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Valid Driverโ€™s License, with ability to maintain insurability under the companyโ€™s insurance carrier

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily inspections of construction activities and attend construction meetings
  • Conduct migratory bird nest sweeps and other wildlife monitoring activities, as required
  • Ensure implementation of mitigation measures from environmental management documents, permit conditions, and best management practices
  • Inspect implemented erosion and sediment control measures and provide recommendations for repair and amendment, when needed
  • Oversee and direct soils handling activities (e.g., topsoil stripping)
  • Develop and implement corrective action plans and mitigation measures for any identified environmental issues or hazards
  • Act as an environmental lead for the construction team
  • Act as a resource to construction personnel and explain environmental regulations and how they are applied in the field
  • Verify that environmentally sensitive areas are properly marked and flagged before work is done in the area
  • Coordinate daily with construction team to discuss upcoming construction activities that are existing, potential problem areas and areas of concern
  • Inspect areas of concern and make appropriate recommendations to construction personnel, as required
  • Complete daily and monthly environmental reports, including nest sweep reports
  • Review field reports for consistency and accuracy
  • Support the preparation of environmental permits, when required
  • Coordinate with regulatory bodies, when required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience related to pipeline, transmission line or renewable energy project construction would be an asset
  • Experienced leading field work, and coordinating with various field teams
  • Experience and knowledge related to other biophysical disciplines, such as wetlands, vegetation, aquatics, etc. would be an asset
  • Designation or certification related to erosion and sediment control, such as CPESC or CESSWI, would be an asset
  • Experience with ESRI products, such as ArcGIS Pro, Survey 123 and Field Maps would be an asset
