Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in digital sports journalism, with experience at a management level
  • Keen news judgment, with experience framing stories that result in solid engagement
  • The ability to work with reporters and fellow editors to strengthen ideas both individually and as part of a broader report
  • Advanced understanding of copy editing, story structure, style guidelines and clear, succinct writing
  • Clear understanding of fairness, accuracy and sensitive subjects and sourcing needs
  • Expert ability to mentor writers and editors of all levels
  • High-end knowledge of sports news
  • The ability to work nights and weekends as needed, serving on call for major stories and sporting events

Responsibilities

  • Manage a staff of editors and reporters with an emphasis on the delivery of daily news stories
  • Collaborate on the big-picture, conceptual vision for the vertical in concert with the wider newsroom, including the generation and execution of story ideas with the broadest possible appeal
  • Provide long term direction of the News team and strategic development for its staff
  • Develop workflow and prioritization to balance a wide range of assignments, including fast-paced breaking news, creative spot features, timely explainers and longer range projects
  • Work to bring a distinctive voice and strong editing guidance to our coverage
  • Maintain an understanding and proficiency of key newsroom metrics and audience strategies
  • Coordinate staffing, including schedules, with respect to editorial resources and key priorities
  • Collaborate with staff all over the newsroom for stories and to serve as a leader and liaison with individual sport verticals and other departments
  • Edit and publish stories via WordPress
  • Manage the vertical’s financial budget, including month-to-month expenditures
