Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in a payroll-related position
  • At least 2 years of experience in payroll tax, accounting, or a related field
  • Proven experience processing payroll for a large employee base (6,000+ employees) in both Canada and the US
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian provincial payroll regulations, including experience with collective bargaining agreements
  • Strong understanding of US federal and state payroll laws and tax regulations
  • Proficiency in Workday payroll system is essential
  • Experience with ServiceNow or similar case management systems for employee query management
  • Familiarity with internal controls and SOX compliance
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Maintain strict confidentiality standards
  • Strong proficiency in Excel, including VLOOKUP and pivot tables

Responsibilities

  • Process accurate and timely payroll for over 6,000 employees across multiple Canadian provinces and US states within Workday
  • Ensure all employee wages and payroll deductions comply with Canadian provincial regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and US federal and state laws
  • Accurately calculate and deduct various payroll items, including benefits, wage garnishments, and all applicable taxes
  • Process all forms of taxable income, such as awards, gift cards, and relocation expenses, ensuring correct tax treatment
  • Issue Records of Employment (ROEs) and complete all payroll information requests from Service Canada
  • Conduct periodic, quarterly, and annual payroll audits
  • Process wage and tax adjustments as needed to maintain accuracy
  • Troubleshoot and resolve payroll issues promptly by collaborating with HR, Finance, and employees
  • Engage with employees and external agencies via ServiceNow to address and resolve payroll-related queries
  • Collaborate with various teams to identify and implement opportunities for streamlining payroll processes
  • Assist with quarter-end and year-end tasks, ensuring the accuracy of annual T-4s and RL-1s, and processing corrections as required
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of internal controls and SOX documentation, with experience in control testing
  • Propose and implement innovative ideas and automated solutions to enhance payroll functions and efficiency
  • Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and reconciliation across all payroll systems
  • Manage and successfully complete complex and sensitive payroll projects as required

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience preferred
