Referral Counselor

Summary

The job is a remote position at the New York City Bar Association's Legal Referral Service. The role involves handling calls and emails from the general public, triaging legal issues, providing basic legal information, and performing other duties as assigned. Candidates must have a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, at least one year of employment in a legal environment/organization, excellent phone manner, customer service skills, written/verbal communication skills, ability to deal with challenging individuals, strong PC skills, and be authorized to work in the United States.

Requirements

• J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
• Bilingual, Spanish required
• At least one year of employment in a legal environment/organization
• Excellent phone manner, customer service and written/verbal communication skills
• Must be able to deal effectively with challenging individuals
• Ability to stay calm in stressful situations
• Strong PC skills, including Microsoft Office 365 products

Responsibilities

• Respond to high volume of calls and emails from the general public
• Triage legal issues and direct clients to participating lawyers and other legal resources
• Provide basic legal information to the public
• Achieve and maintain general knowledge of New York law and legal resources available to New Yorkers
• Perform other duties, including legal research, public relations, marketing and public outreach, as assigned
