Summary
Join our team as a Campaign Organizer - Beyond Coal Campaign to organize campaigns that win real victories and build grassroots power. As a key member of our team, you will work closely with chapter(s), volunteers, partners, and staff across the assigned region to recruit and train volunteers, implement campaign strategies, and represent Sierra Club at community events and with partner organizations.
Requirements
- Experience as an organizer and/or community organizing and/or demonstrated ability in onboarding, training, coaching and supporting volunteers
- Experience designing and implementing tactics as part of a larger campaign strategy
- Some knowledge and experience with the craft of grassroots organizing and power building
- A working understanding of quantitative data (for example, numbers of people engaged) and qualitative data (for instance, stories about people taking action) and a willingness to use data to inform and evaluate organizing work
- Working knowledge and experience with G-Suite, Zoom, Canva, Mobilize, and Hustle and the ability to learn new technology tools to support organizing and campaign goals
- Proven ability to train and coach volunteers on tools
- Demonstrated leadership experience working within a team structure
- Ability to build vision, trust, and mutual accountability with team members
- Experience working closely with volunteers
- Some experience planning or implementing a state or regional level campaign, including developing strategy and tactics, organizing, lobbying, media relations, and working with mid- to senior level political, organizational and business leaders
- Track record of recruiting and developing volunteer leaders along a progression of leadership
- Skillful at building trusting, mutually accountable relationships with a diversity of volunteer leaders
- Skillful at placing volunteers with roles that match their expertise and passions
- Highly developed communication skills, with a focus on communicating effectively across different groups of stakeholders, internally and externally
- Reliable communicator that regularly follows up with volunteer leaders
- As a member of the state team, this individual is expected to have a focused and sustained attention towards calling out and challenging systems, policies, practices, or procedures that have racist effects
- Has a proven track record of understanding systems of oppression and a commitment to continuously deepening study and learning
- Experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role
- Easily recognizes own relationship to privilege and power, examining and shifting behaviors as appropriate
Responsibilities
- Participates in the creation of a regional strategy for the Beyond Coal Campaign while leading a specific campaign, balancing national and local priorities
- Works to incorporate key states and chapter stakeholders, including volunteers, to create and implement a campaign of the overarching strategic plan
- Develops individual campaign organizing plans, including organizing tactics
- Collaborates with volunteers to implement components of an overarching strategic plan for Beyond Coal Campaign priorities in the assigned states or region
- Facilitates organizing meetings, volunteer onboarding and integration, and developing and leveraging partnerships
- Tracks policy and regulatory proceedings in the assigned region that are relevant to the campaign, identifies opportunities for engagement, mobilization, or intervention
- Evaluates progress towards goals through data collection and key metrics
- Builds a healthy, mutually accountable relationship with Chapter staff and volunteers to carry out Beyond Coal Campaign priorities
- Communicates clear expectations, capacity, and works in strategic alignment to accomplish Sierra Club’s priority goals
- Prioritizes relationships with volunteer leaders and coordinates with other Sierra Club stakeholders as needed
- Identify and recruit potential volunteers and activists, match volunteers to their areas of interest, and increase volunteer and activist participation within the Chapter structure
- Support issue-focused volunteer teams to accomplish their goals, coach volunteers on skills, coordinate activities, and to engage key stakeholders and coalitions, elected and appointed decision makers, and their influencers to assure advancement of the Beyond Coal Campaign’s priorities
- Maintain good data practices tracking volunteers teams, roles, and contact information as well as other core metrics
- Coordinates with coalition partners and outside interest groups to plan volunteer activities supporting Beyond Coal Campaign’s priorities
- Attends chapter, group, and committee meetings to coordinate events and mobilization tactics
- Responds to inquiries concerning membership, outings, events, and environmental issues from the general public, members, and volunteers
- Provides good public relations and volunteer support for Sierra Club
- In coordination with staff and volunteers, represents Beyond Coal Campaign priorities to public officials, partner organizations, and to the media
- Maintains positive relationships with strategic partners, coalitions, members of the media, grassroots leaders, elected officials, and government officials when strategic and aligns with the strategic priorities in the assigned region
- Serves as Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets and promotes volunteer and partner organization media exposure
- Build, maintain, and participate on teams to advance state-level specific campaign work and Chapter organization building
- Train and develop volunteer leaders who are skillful at facilitating effective, healthy teams
- Actively participate and build the state campaign teams, as needed
