Summary

Digital Extremes is seeking a Senior Lighting Artist to collaborate with the creative team on game projects. The role involves understanding game design documents, assisting in the design of lighting systems, fixing lighting bugs, optimizing the lighting, and carrying out other related tasks. Requirements include a college diploma or university degree in a relevant field, formal training as a lighting artist, at least five years of experience in real-time lighting for games, artistic knowledge of lighting techniques, practical experience using project management software, and a portfolio demonstrating a diverse range of lighting types and settings.

Requirements

  • College diploma or University degree in 3D, Game Development, Graphic Arts, Fine Arts or similar field
  • Formal training as a lighting artist in games or film or experience in a studio photography setting
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in the field of real-time lighting for games and have a high-level understanding of both the artistic and technical guidelines/impacts that lighting can have on a game environment
  • Artistic knowledge of lighting techniques, real-time and pre-rendered
  • Knowledge of lighting, colour theory and image composition
  • Practical experience using project management software such as Jira, Shotgun, BaseCamp, etc

Responsibilities

  • Understand game design documents to become familiar with the challenges impacting game lighting and propose atmosphere and lighting ideas
  • Assist in the design of lighting systems that support the atmosphere and gameplay effects and highlight the work of the Level Design and Level Art teams
  • In addition to light sources, assist in the placement of lighting specific vfx items and in the management of the lighting portion of levels
  • Have the artistic director and technical director validate the quality of the lighting and make any changes that are requested
  • Verify and maintain the quality of the lighting from both an artistic and technical standpoint across many levels and multiple projects
  • Be a point of contact for other team members to help solve any technical or artistic lighting problems
  • Fix the lighting bugs entered by testers
  • Optimize the lighting, in keeping with the technical limitations of the engine
  • Be involved in the ongoing maintenance of our live and evolving game as it pertains to lighting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in photography an asset
  • Experience in computer graphics or pre-rendering an asset
