Summary

Join Aprio's Specialty Tax/SALT team as a Senior Tax Associate, focusing on sales and use tax. You will be a trusted resource for clients, helping them navigate complex tax rules and achieve sustainable compliance. Responsibilities include preparing and filing tax returns, researching tax issues, establishing filing schedules, analyzing client data, responding to tax notices, and mentoring junior staff. A Bachelor's degree in Accounting and 2–6 years of relevant experience are required. Preferred qualifications include a CPA, JD, or CMIPT certification, experience with multi-state sales tax returns, and familiarity with tax software. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
  • 2–6 years of experience in state and local tax compliance and/or consulting
  • Experience with multi-state sales tax returns and tax research
  • Strong knowledge of nexus, exemptions, product taxability, and tax system mapping
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • Comfortable working independently in a remote team environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Office tools
  • Willingness to travel as needed

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and file state and local sales and use tax returns for multi-state clients
  • Research complex indirect tax issues, including nexus and registration requirements
  • Help clients establish recurring tax return filing schedules and best practices
  • Analyze client data to identify sales tax overpayment opportunities
  • Respond to state and local tax notices, coordinating with taxing authorities as needed
  • Deliver client-ready technical memorandums and correspondence
  • Review tax workpapers and returns prepared by associates
  • Support onboarding of new clients with sales tax setup and mapping support
  • Train and mentor junior staff and interns on indirect tax matters
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA, JD, or CMIPT (Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation) preferred
  • Familiarity with tax software such as Avalara, Vertex, Sovos, or CCH is a plus
  • Familiarity with AI-powered tools or data analytics platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Power BI, Alteryx, or similar) - preferred, not required
  • Interest in leveraging technology to automate manual processes and improve efficiency in tax compliance - preferred, not required
  • Comfortable exploring AI use cases in tax research, data review, or client communication - preferred, not required
  • Prepare and review international VAT returns and assist clients with global indirect tax registrations and filings - preferred, not required
