Engineering Manager

Summary

Join Canva's Design Gateway team as an engineering leader to guide a team of engineers, ensuring they meet their goals and develop their skills. You will provide hands-on technical leadership through code reviews, design document creation, and coding contributions. This role requires using first principles reasoning and problem-solving skills to maintain domain integrity while supporting new feature development. You will also drive planning and refinement of goals, embed best practices, and collaborate with engineers and product managers. Requirements

• You have experience in technical leadership, making sound decisions and executing on technical projects
• You thrive as a technical people leader of backend engineers, and delivering outcomes on technical projects
• You’re well versed in agile and application of best practices (we like Lean, Kanban, and Scrum)
• You have hands on experience in Java and AWS
• You are firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals including data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns
• You have exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to break large projects down into smaller ones and deliver on them through others
• You’re a strong communicator and can quickly build effective working relationships across teams

Responsibilities

• Work closely with the team’s technical lead, to ensure the team is on track to achieving their goals
• Be directly responsible for a team of awesome engineers and developing their skills through effective coaching and mentoring
• Provide hands-on technical leadership through code reviews, creating and reviewing design documents, and contributing code
• Use first principles reasoning and XY problem solving skills to protect the domain integrity of our artefacts, while supporting Canva to deliver awesome new features and functionality to our users
• Drive the planning and refinement of goals, ensuring there is alignment across the company, group, and teams
• Embed best practices into our development processes, helping improve processes through regular retrospectives and way of working reviews
• Collaborate with engineers and PMs across the business to shape our capabilities
