FinOps Engineer

Summary

Join The Duckbill Group as a part-time freelance/contract AWS specialist. Help clients understand and optimize their AWS spending by identifying cost reduction opportunities, building forecasting models, and improving governance. You will work closely with executives and engineers, communicating effectively across various audiences. Experience in engineering, SRE, DevOps, finance, or business backgrounds is valuable. The role requires strong AWS knowledge, excellent communication skills, and prior experience in AWS cost management and client-facing roles. This remote position is open to US-based individuals legally authorized to work in the US. Compensation is $150-$250 per hour, depending on experience.

Requirements

• Strong understanding of AWS concepts, tools, and services
• Prior experience communicating effectively with executive audiences
• Prior experience in AWS cost management
• Prior experience working in a consultative, client-facing role
• Must be US-based and legally authorized to work in the United States

Responsibilities

• Help our clients understand and optimize their AWS spend
• Identify cost reduction opportunities at an architectural level
• Build cost forecasting models
• Create better governance and cost management controls
• Assess clients' own cost management programs
• Continuously identify better ways to serve our clients
• Work closely with executives and engineers from our clients
• Lead projects on some of the largest, most complicated AWS environments
• Communicate to both executive audiences and engineering audiences
• Work with a high degree of autonomy, often running engagements by yourself
• Communicate across multiple teams at our clients, from Engineering to Finance, and up to C-suite staff
• Work with clients via email, Slack, and video calls
• Work directly with clients to help them understand their AWS spend and optimize it based on their unique architecture and desired business outcomes
• Keep up to date on the latest AWS news and changes and continually work at being an expert in all-things-AWS
• Take a data-driven approach to cost management

Preferred Qualifications

Experience from Engineering/SRE/DevOps background and finance/business backgrounds
