Summary
Join Alpaca as a Part-Time Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and play a key role in establishing a new CIRO Dealer Member. This critical part-time position will focus on the firm’s application process with regulatory authorities and building the financial framework for success. You will work closely with the President/CEO, ensuring compliance with financial regulatory requirements and overseeing all aspects of financial reporting. The role may transition to full-time upon membership approval. Responsibilities include leading financial efforts for the CIRO application, safeguarding assets, managing regulatory filings, and developing policies and procedures. You will also build a high-performing team and collaborate with global stakeholders.
Requirements
- Minimum 5+ years of financial experience, including senior leadership roles
- Completion of the CSI Chief Financial Officer Qualifying Examination
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, law, or equivalent work-related field (preferred)
- A strong understanding of Financial Accounting and CRA Tax Requirements is expected
- Proven experience dealing with the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and/or the Ontario Securities Commission. Experience with Risk Adjusted Capital calculations and CIRO’s Early Warning Capital Rules
- Technical skills and knowledge of trade life cycle with a focus on monitoring of the settlement of trades and managing the implementation of a carrying broker platform to ensure proper GL setups and reports are in place
- Must have the ability to manage banking operations, have an awareness of items that can impact the Firm’s regulatory capital
- Strong track record of developing and administering internal controls, with the ability to manage audits and exams independently
- Experience collaborating with remote, global teams to achieve financial objectives
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for effectively engaging diverse stakeholders
- Requires strategic thinking, excellent analytical skills and decision-making abilities to navigate new and complex regulatory environments and proactively turn around solutions in a short period to meet deadlines
- High ethical standards and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality
Responsibilities
- Lead financial efforts for the firm’s CIRO Investment Dealer application, ensuring all regulatory financial requirements are met
- Safeguard assets and reputation by ensuring control mechanisms are in place to identify and mitigate risk, including through frequent monitoring of capital and relevant limits; and reconciliation of the Firm’s bank accounts, management of fund disbursements, etc
- Ensure the integrity and timely filing of monthly and annual financial information, both regulatory and statutory, and comply with the continuous disclosure requirements of various regulatory bodies
- Manage communications with CIRO, OSC, and other regulators, including financial notifications, and handling day-to-day interactions
- Create policies and procedures to ensure the business is properly supervised and managed. Maintain a complete record of all documentation as prescribed by regulation, and update as needed based upon business and regulatory changes
- Oversee training programs for employees, ensuring they are well-informed of financial regulatory obligations
- Provide regular updates to senior management regarding financial activities, risks, and incidents. Escalate material issues appropriately
- Partner with the President/CEO to recruit and develop a high-performing team
- Manage and develop global relationships with key stakeholders to ensure a consistent and integrated financial approach
- Collaborate and support the firm’s teams to integrate new initiatives, financial regulatory obligations, and any other assignments as assigned by the President/CEO
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 5-10 years of experience in CIRO investment dealer operations, financial reporting, clearing, or a related field
- Professional financial or related qualifications, and membership of a recognized professional body
