International Fintech Counsel

Summary

Join Toast's Legal team as a mid-level attorney specializing in multi-jurisdictional financial regulations. You will provide legal support to various business teams, design compliant financial products, and draft/negotiate agreements. This remote role requires 6+ years of experience advising on US and international financial products and services, strong knowledge of financial laws and regulations, and expertise in specific financial products. The role offers a competitive salary ($131,000-$210,000 USD), benefits, and equity. Preference is given to candidates located in the UK, Ireland, Canada, or the east coast US. The position reports to Toast’s Assistant General Counsel, FinTech.

Requirements

• Must hold a degree from an ABA-accreditedABA accredited law school, or the equivalent in your jurisdiction, and meet all professional and legal requirements necessary to practice in-house law in your jurisdiction
• 6+ years of legal experience advising corporate clients on US and international financial products and services
• Experience leading negotiations and drafting commercial agreements and consumer terms of service, specifically within the financial services industry
• Strong knowledge of financial laws and regulations and best practices across multiple jurisdictions, including applicable jurisdictional laws related to banking products, consumer protection, extensions of credit, flows of funds (including money transmission), and card association and payment network rules
• Subject matter expertise with one or more of the following products/services: commercial credit (e.g., loans, lines of credit, and/or credit cards), banking products (e.g., checking, savings, debit cards), alternative payment methods, purchase financing, merchant acquiring services, early wage access products, and/or retail installment sales. (Note: mortgage + auto financing not applicable)

Responsibilities

• Advise a wide range of business stakeholders across multiple teams (including Product, Operations, Engineering, Marketing, Capital Markets, Strategic Alliances, and more) on new and existing financial laws and regulations in the US, Canada, Ireland, UK, and others as Toast expands into new territories
• Represent Legal on cross-functional teams to help design and implement cutting-edge financial products, identify creative solutions to unique use cases and escalated issues, and ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, partner contracts, and card brand rules
• Draft and negotiate agreements with financial institutions, third-party providers of financial services, card networks, merchants, and consumers
• Research, analyze, and respond to legal and regulatory questions regarding a variety of financial products and services
• Review multi-channel advertising materials for compliance with applicable laws and best practices, and provide feedback and guidance to Marketing team stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

• UK, Ireland, Canada, or the east coast US (where the majority of the Legal team is located) is preferred
• Expertise across all jurisdictions is not required, provided that you have deep experience with researching, interpreting, and advising on a variety of international financial laws
