As an Assistant or Journal Manager, you will lead the strategic direction, growth, and financial performance of a portfolio of scholarly journals. You will collaborate with editors and internal teams, driving initiatives to enhance editorial quality, community engagement, and operational efficiency. This role demands a passion for scholarly publishing and a commitment to innovation in open science, research integrity, and user experience. You will be responsible for leading strategy development and execution, monitoring industry trends, guiding editorial content strategy, and driving author and reviewer engagement. The position requires strong knowledge of scholarly publishing and excellent communication skills.

  • Data literacy with tools like Excel and PowerBI for tracking performance and supporting strategic decisions
  • Project management and organizational excellence, particularly in distributed or remote settings
  • Comfort with ambiguity, sound decision-making, and an adaptive mindset
  • A proactive, collaborative approach to team development and continuous learning
  • Experience with the scholarly publishing process and/or peer review as either an author, reviewer, editor, or publishing professional required
  • Experience working closely with researchers, editors, and academic communities through outreach, conference engagement, or similar initiatives required

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategy development and execution for assigned journals, ensuring alignment with portfolio goals and key publishing metrics
  • Monitor industry trends and conduct competitive analysis to inform journal positioning and development
  • Guide editorial content strategy in collaboration with Editors, focusing on emerging research and community relevance
  • Drive author, reviewer, and editor engagement through targeted outreach and retention strategies
  • Act as a trusted editorial partner and primary liaison to Editors, addressing concerns with clarity and professionalism
  • Manage editorial board lifecycles—including recruitment, onboarding, renewals, and performance monitoring
  • Contribute to organizational initiatives, from product development to cross-functional process improvement
  • Analyze journal performance data and champion scalable, data-driven reporting solutions
  • Support editorial best practices and mentor junior team members to foster a culture of knowledge-sharing and growth

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in scholarly publishing, with demonstrated journal management and editorial/business strategy responsibilities, strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with the physical sciences is preferred; a graduate degree in a related field is a plus
  • Strong data literacy, especially using Excel and PowerBI; experience with peer review platforms and CRMs is a bonus
  • Demonstrated cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder management experience
  • Previous mentorship or onboarding experience is highly desirable
  • Willingness to travel to conferences and meetings as needed
