Summary

Join Virta Health's mission to transform type 2 diabetes and weight-loss care as their Payroll Manager. Oversee end-to-end payroll operations for a fully remote workforce, ensuring timely and accurate processing while adhering to compliance standards. Lead the payroll team, providing mentorship and support, and collaborate with various departments to streamline processes. Execute payroll audits, analyze reports, and resolve complex issues. Champion continuous process improvement and scalability, preparing for future growth and IPO readiness. Within the first 90 days, you will fully own payroll processing, propose operational updates, and collaborate with employees and leaders to resolve issues and support audits. This role requires strong leadership, technical skills, and a deep understanding of payroll regulations.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of multi-state payroll experience, including experience leading and developing a payroll team in a fast-paced or high-growth environment
  • Advanced proficiency in payroll platforms (e.g., ADP, Workday), HRIS systems, Excel, and Google Workspace
  • Deep knowledge of U.S. federal and state payroll regulations, including FLSA, wage and hour laws, and tax compliance
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in handling high-volume data
  • Clear and effective communicator, capable of explaining payroll policies and resolving employee concerns with professionalism
  • Demonstrated discretion and ability to handle sensitive employee data with a high level of confidentiality

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and mentor the payroll team, providing coaching, support, and training to ensure accuracy and efficiency in payroll processing
  • Own the preparation, documentation, and execution of multi-state payroll cycles, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and adherence to internal deadlines
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax and labor regulations, as well as internal controls expectations such as SOX compliance, while staying current with evolving legislation and industry best practices
  • Lead and execute payroll audits, including ongoing reconciliations of payroll accounts, tax withholdings, benefits contributions, and other deductions
  • Prepare and analyze payroll reports, conduct audits to identify discrepancies or issues, and reconcile payroll accounts. Work closely within the team and Accounting to coordinate employee information and reporting, including headcount analysis, labor cost trends, and other key performance metrics
  • Act as the primary escalation point for complex payroll issues, investigating and resolving discrepancies, and addressing concerns from employees and other departments
  • Partner with Accounting and Legal to ensure payroll operations are well-documented, audit-ready, and aligned with evolving compliance expectations as the company scales
  • Champion continuous process improvement; identify opportunities to automate workflows, reduce errors, and scale payroll operations for IPO readiness
  • Lead or support key initiatives such as system upgrades, vendor transitions, new benefit implementations, and M&A-related payroll integration
  • Fully own and run end-to-end payroll processing while leading and supporting the payroll team
  • Evaluate and begin proposing updates to payroll operations, documentation, and policies for improved accuracy, efficiency, and scalability
  • Demonstrate professionalism, responsiveness, and exceptional attention to detail in all employee and stakeholder interactions
  • Collaborate directly with employees and functional leaders to resolve payroll issues, support reporting needs, and lead or assist with internal audits
  • Begin assessing documentation and internal controls related to payroll processes to support SOX readiness and future audit requirements
