Summary

Join Twilio as a Senior Counsel on the Product Legal Team, providing legal support to the R&D organization. This key role involves partnering with global Product and Engineering teams, offering legal guidance throughout the product lifecycle. You will ensure products and services meet strategic objectives while complying with laws and regulations. Collaboration with various stakeholders and legal colleagues is crucial in this fast-paced environment. Responsibilities include advising on legal risks, ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting go-to-market strategies, reviewing agreements, assisting with privacy assessments, reviewing marketing materials, monitoring regulatory developments, and assisting with AI governance. The position requires a J.D., strong academic credentials, and significant legal experience, including in-house experience at a technology company. The role is remote and based in British Columbia, with occasional travel.

Requirements

  • J.D. with strong academic credentials and demonstrated record of success as a lawyer and Member of local State Bar or eligible to register as Registered In-House Counsel
  • 8+ years of legal experience, at least three of which should be in an in-house environment at a technology company
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a cross functional team
  • Proven experience counseling product and/or engineering teams on issues that may include compliance with regulatory frameworks
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, effective communication skills, quick learner, and a strong sense of initiative
  • Experience negotiating contracts with customers in a technology company
  • Familiarity with global privacy frameworks

Responsibilities

  • Advise Product and Engineering during all stages of product development on how to navigate potential legal risks
  • Work with Product and Engineering teams to ensure our products and services comply with existing applicable regulations
  • Advise Product and Engineering teams on the go-to-market strategy for new products including structuring and drafting legal terms as required
  • Support the commercial transactions legal team in reviewing, and negotiating legal agreements with customers, vendors, and business partners
  • Support the Privacy team in identifying privacy risks and in conducting data protection and/or Privacy Impact Assessments
  • Review marketing materials in relation to our product and service offerings
  • Collaborate with legal colleagues to monitor and analyze developments in regulations applicable to our product and service offerings and advise internal teams as necessary
  • Assist with governance as it relates to the development and deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) features in products and AI model development to ensure responsible use, compliance with AI regulations, and alignment with industry best practices
  • Help develop and maintain legal processes and documentation to support the product legal team function

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience counseling product and/or engineering teams on compliance with regulatory frameworks applicable to U.S. and global electronic communications platforms
  • Experience counseling product and/or engineering teams on emerging Artificial Intelligence regulations and assisting with AI governance policies and processes
