Summary

Join Aspen Publishing's growing Editorial Team as a Development Manager (Editorial)! Based in Burlington, MA, with a hybrid or remote option, you'll collaborate with various teams to deliver impactful educational content. This role requires strong leadership and editorial skills, experience managing freelance contributors, and a passion for educational publishing. You will oversee development editors, manage schedules and budgets, and serve as a development editor for select titles. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in educational publishing and strong communication and project management skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably Journalism/Communications/English or equivalent
  • 7+ years educational publishing, preferably as a development manager, editor, content editor, or related experience
  • Strong understanding of industry trends and consumer preferences
  • Familiarity with book publishing processes and standards
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Word) and Adobe Acrobat (PDF)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, English required
  • Comfortable presenting content and pitching ideas to various audiences which may include colleagues, authors, senior management, as well as others
  • Project management experience, including prioritization, problem solving, timeliness, and managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to analyze data and situations and provide solutions
  • Liaising between internal and external groups
  • Willing to travel occasionally
  • Working with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the work of development editors to ensure that they: Review, analyze, and evaluate submitted manuscripts or other written content for coherence, organization, and logical flow
  • Work closely with authors to develop their ideas and optimize the structure and content of their work
  • Provide constructive feedback to authors and suggest appropriate improvements
  • Ensure consistency of tone, voice, and style throughout the text
  • Create detailed editorial schedules and guidelines for authors
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve readability, clarity, and quality of content
  • Ensure that all content aligns with the publisher’s style guide and standards
  • Monitor and manage the progress of the editing process, ensuring that deadlines are met
  • Facilitate communication between authors and the publishing team, mediating when necessary
  • Stay up-to-date on educational publishing trends and consumer (both student and professor) preferences to provide informed feedback and developmental guidance
  • Always represent Aspen Publishing in a professional and competent manner
  • Proactively pursue professional development activities
  • Manage time and company resources appropriately
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
