Join the National Safety Council (NSC) as a Government Affairs Coordinator and contribute to our mission of saving lives and preventing injuries. This dynamic role involves supporting and leading NSC Government Affairs initiatives at the federal and state levels, serving as the lead on designated priorities, and representing NSC at meetings with legislators and other stakeholders. You will work collaboratively with team members to advance safety issues, research and draft policy statements, and engage with policymakers. The position requires policy development expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to build and maintain alliances with external organizations. This hybrid/remote position offers a competitive salary and benefits package.
Requirements
- Bachelorโs degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant area with a minimum of 2 years of experience in public policy, lobbying, or advancing advocacy initiatives
- Must be motivated and mission-driven with an eagerness to take initiative on a wide range of matters, from policy development to housekeeping tasks
Responsibilities
- Support policy development and engagement with policymakers on Capitol Hill, at federal agencies, and in state and local bodies โ 30%
- Develop policy expertise in select areas, in concert with other Government Affairs team members and NSC experts and partners, and work with external actors to advance policy priorities in workplace and roadway safety
- Support NSC efforts to work with legislative champions to launch authorizing measures, to affect appropriations bills, to carry out NSC priorities in committees of jurisdiction and on the floor of the U.S, House of Representatives and Senate
- Support efforts to track administrative proposals, rulemakings, requests for comment and information, and related regulatory activity on matters of importance to NSC, and support engagement in the development of regulations and standards
- Aid, as much as possible, in tracking policy-related activity in federal courts tied to NSC workplace and roadway safety positions
- Aid in the research and drafting of official NSC policy position statements on pertinent safety topics in coordination with appropriate NSC staff
- Develop and distribute key external and internal communications materials, such as newsletters, policy updates, and other collateral
- Work with an extensive number of outside organizations, including many similarly situated safety-focused organizations and advocacy groups, to build relationships around shared goals and develop and execute strategies to achieve such goals
- Aid in the management of a DC office suite and clerical needs as appropriate, including coordinating Government Affairs operations and resources
- Aid in scheduling meetings for Government Affairs team members and other NSC stakeholders with key external targets
- Lead planning and execution of major events, such as NSC-led fly-ins to Congress and Hill briefings
- Other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a Capitol Hill office
- Experience in transportation or workplace safety policy
